Intrigue: Set Down Your Glass

For me, it doesn’t get much better than simple intrigue. I’m not one of those people that likes sitting in line waiting for roller coasters, but I’m kept there, intrigued by the feeling, the rush, the excitement, and how it will all play out.
I’ve been a fan of Snow Patrol’s for easily two years, but the group is not in my list of bands I regularly follow and releases I must have as soon as possible. I don’t know why: they write a great song and the first two albums were in constant rotation in my iPod when I got them. I can offer up the simple explanation that very few artists get to the “I MUST HAVE IT AS SOON AS IT’S AVAILABLE” status. Maybe I’m mellowing with age. In any event, I still adore Snow Patrol enough to keep up with them and find out what they’re up to when they pop up on my radar.
They recently did and, I have to say, it rarely gets better for me than the song, Set Down Your Glass:
I’m ashamed to tell you how many times I’ve listened to this song in one day. Undoubtedly, it strikes a personal chord for me, but that’s what great writing does: in songs, blogs, poems, or any form of writing. That personal chord reaches across the barrier and you can place yourself in the position of the writer.
This song, though? It goes beyond that for me. Not only does it make me think about some deeply personal moments, but it intrigues me as to the story behind the song. It enables some of the voyeuristic attitude within my head. There are times when I listen to this song in which I can place myself in the story, and then, there are times I can imagine the scenario playing out in the apartment across the way. It makes me want to write the scene out. It inspires, but more… it intrigues me.
I’ll admit, it may be incredibly simple and you may not feel that way about this song or Snow Patrol, but I can’t stop listening to it. And for me, that says so very much.
The lyrics:
Just close your eyes
And count to five
Let’s craft the only thing
We know into surprise
Set down your glass
I painted this
To look like you and me forever
As we’re now
And I’m shaking then I’m still
When you’re eyes meet mine
I lose simple skills
Like to tell you all I want is now
You sing and I’m killed
Joe Dirt film I’m just not the same
As I was a year ago
And each minute since then
My jumper tears
As we take it off
And you say you’ll sew me good as new
And I know you will
And I’m shaken then I’m still
When your eyes meet mine
I lose simple skills
Like to tell you all I want is now
And I’m shaken then I’m still
When your eyes meet mine
I lose simple skills
Like to tell you all I want is now
