Mountains and Admiration
My mom and I don’t have many positive conversations. She’s also a prickly sort, and is hard on me at times. We love each other, but we’re almost polar opposites on some very important things in life.
We were talking today, about a family member, and my mom was making a comparison to me about that family member. My mom said one of the nicest things she’s said about me in a long time. She said, “it’s almost as if, you’re constantly climbing a mountain…. every time you get close to the top, something comes along and just sweeps you back or down to the bottom and, you get up and start climbing again.”
For the first time in maybe ever, there was a tone of admiration in her voice that I had this amazing perseverance - that for me, personally, life is this constant struggle… and I don’t give up. I don’t back down. I just get back up, dust myself off… and start climbing again.
