50 Years Ago Today - Mercury 7 Astronauts Visit the White House
(From L-R): Major L. Gordon Cooper, Lieutenant Colonel Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, Major Donald K. “Deke” Slayton, Lieutenant Commander Walter Schirra, Lieutenant Commander M. Scott Carpenter, Commander Alan B. Shepard, and their wives visit the White House

You know what my favourite episode of “From the Earth to the Moon” was?  It was the one that featured the wives.  I think it was the second to last episode to be aired, but it featured the toll that the ambitions of astronauts placed on their families, especially their wives.
So, I have to ask… we couldn’t take the time to identify the women in this photo?  Seriously?  To honour the help they were to the space program - how they were constant promoters of how “excited and proud” they were, when they were probably scared out of their minds that they would never see their husbands again?   These women were a crucial part of the Space program… they should be honoured, too.

Two days and counting until we launch our latest exhibit – To The Brink: JFK and the Cuban Missile Crisis! We’re adding a few finishing touches, but here’s a sneak peek: the chairs used by President Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in their 1961 Vienna meeting. The iconic photo of their meeting can be seen in the background.
To The Brink: JFK and the Cuban Missile Crisis opens April 12 at the JFK Library. Watch here to learn more about the exhibit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KO9YrVKc7Tc&feature=youtu.be

Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., Kathleen Kennedy, and John F. Kennedy, sons and daughter of United States Ambassador to England Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., arrive at the House of Parliament in London to hear Prime Minister Chamberlain’s announcement that a state of war existed between England and Germany, September 1939.

My favourite Kennedy daughter is Kathleen / “Kick”…

Presidential photographers are afforded access to their subjects that most journalists only dream of. But what happens when their original negatives are destroyed? That’s precisely what happened to some 40,000 negatives of the Kennedy family made by Jacques Lowe.
Here, a look at Jacques Lowe’s rare (and recently restored) look at JFK’s Camelot.

40,000?!?!?!?!?!??!?!  I want answers as to why!
