50 Years Ago Today - Mercury 7 Astronauts Visit the White House
(From L-R): Major L. Gordon Cooper, Lieutenant Colonel Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, Major Donald K. “Deke” Slayton, Lieutenant Commander Walter Schirra, Lieutenant Commander M. Scott Carpenter, Commander Alan B. Shepard, and their wives visit the White House

You know what my favourite episode of “From the Earth to the Moon” was?  It was the one that featured the wives.  I think it was the second to last episode to be aired, but it featured the toll that the ambitions of astronauts placed on their families, especially their wives.
So, I have to ask… we couldn’t take the time to identify the women in this photo?  Seriously?  To honour the help they were to the space program - how they were constant promoters of how “excited and proud” they were, when they were probably scared out of their minds that they would never see their husbands again?   These women were a crucial part of the Space program… they should be honoured, too.

Hubble has spotted an ancient galaxy that shouldn’t exist

This galaxy is so large, so fully-formed, astronomers say it shouldn’t exist at all. It’s called a “grand-design” spiral galaxy, and unlike most galaxies of its kind, this one is old. Like, really, really old. According to a new study conducted by researchers using NASA’s Hubble Telescope, it dates back roughly 10.7-billion years — and that makes it the most ancient spiral galaxy we’ve ever discovered.
“The vast majority of old galaxies look like train wrecks,” said UCLA astrophysicist Alice Shapley in a press release. “Our first thought was, why is this one so different, and so beautiful?”

The only planet that spins backwards relative to the others is Venus.

I’m often fond of saying I do things backwards, because I do… OMG, you guys, I’m Venus.  :oP

This seems relevant today.

So when those aliens attack, we’re going to be in deep trouble, because we’ll never have seen it coming.

On January 31, 1961, Ham the space chimpanzee made history after blasting off hundreds of miles into low Earth orbit inside a Mercury capsule. Before NASA could send humans into space, they used animals as test subjects to determine whether or not a human could perform tasks or even survive miles above the Earth’s surface. This photo, submitted by NASA to the Senate Committee on Space and Astronautics, captured the image of Ham stretching for an apple after landing safely aboard the capsule. More than just a passive rider, Ham readily performed a series of learned tasks on his journey proving that humans would have at least a limited functionary capability in space. One apple seems a pittance for Ham’s great contribution to the Mercury project and human space flight. Nevertheless, he seemed glad to have it!

In which NASA wins at Gangnam Style parodies now and forever.  Everyone else go home.

Crying.

This is beautiful.

It’s amazing that with the growing popularity of social media, large, traditionally professional groups/businesses/etc. are doing things like this. It absolutely blows my mind.

THIS IS AMAZING

But seriously, what do these poor science peeps have to do for us to give them more money??4nasa

Reblogging this because it’s in my hometown… and my Dad once called me from Mission Control when he was inside (and fixing things while he worked at either AT&T or MCI, can’t remember which), which was pretty cool in the 1980s.  (Still pretty cool now.)

Also - for those that don’t know, only .48% of the U.S.’s budget goes to NASA.  Less than half a cent, which is completely unworthy, considering all the breakthroughs in technology NASA’s research has given us and the fact that, honestly?  Our daily lives would be completely different if not for the agency, itself.   (Satellites, people.  If you own a mobile or watch any kind of television, you owe that to NASA.)

Want to know how to help fix their budget issues?  Go to penny4nasa.org (or contact your U.S. Representative and Senators).
