Forget the never-ending “women aren’t funny” line that spews from every male comedian who has been or will be on the Celebrity Apprentice. The debate Ephron tackled was sexual politics itself and she did it with humor, with words both powerful and resonant. She understood that aphorisms aren’t just throw-aways that cheapen over time but can be piercing retorts in the right woman’s mouth. As Entertainment Weekly wrote about Crazy Salad, “Gloria Steinem was never this much fun,” which is both a little catty and deeply true — Steinem’s weapon of choice was never humor.

washingtonpoststyle:

The best line in “When Harry Met Sally” is not “I’ll have what she’s having.” It is the following exchange about days-of-the-week underwear. It is brilliant, Nora Ephron was a genius, and she will be missed.

Sally Albright: Well, if you must know, it was because he was very jealous, and I had these days of the week underpants.

Harry Burns: Ehhhh. I’m sorry. I need the judges ruling on this. “Days of the weeks underpants”?

Sally Albright: Yes. They had the days of the week on them, and I thought they were sort of funny. And then one day Sheldon says to me, “You never wear Sunday.” It was all suspicious. Where was Sunday? Where had I left Sunday? And I told him, and he didn’t believe me.

Harry Burns: What?
Sally Albright: They don’t make Sunday.
Harry Burns: Why not?
Sally Albright: Because of God.

For women, everywhere… it was this liberating scene.

Nora Ephron was a symbol of the power of women… what we could accomplish if we could come together and be a force.  As the New York Times said (and said it best):

She was a journalist, a blogger, an essayist, a novelist, a playwright, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and a movie director — a rarity in a film industry whose directorial ranks were and continue to be dominated by men.

Thank you, Ms. Ephron… You brought women together as almost no one else has.  Your writing inspired thousands of girls to exercise their gifts, and your ability to transcend where men dominate, gave all of us that have “vaginas” hope…

For me, it was this movie… A final scream from the universe that I’d just made a terribly mistake… It was released in December of 1998, and I’ve loved it ever since.  I don’t love too many silly romantic comedies.  This is maybe one of five or six.  Okay, ten tops, if you’re going to technically include John Hughes fair, which I don’t.

It was this one, though… for me.

For my sister, it was this movie… A movie I saw on the 4th of July the summer it was released, but the movie she didn’t see until it made its way to VHS probably early the next year.  She had borrowed my mom and dad’s copy, before they had a chance to see it, and kept promising to give it back… but never did.  For Christmas, my mom wrapped a second copy of it, with my sister’s name on it.  Once it was unwrapped, my mom took the new copy back and said, “Oh, good… you can keep the other one…”
