True the Vote sues IRS

texasredistricting:

Houston-based conservative group, True the Vote, filed suit against the Internal Revenue Service this morning in federal court in Washington D.C.

The group’s court papers seek a declaration that the group qualifies for tax-exempt non-profit status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, saying that the IRS had improperly delayed a determination decision for nearly three years.

The group also contends that the additional review accorded its application by the IRS violated the First Amendment and asked the court  to declare the IRS’ policy unconstitutional.

Last but not least, the complaint also seeks damages for what the group said were unauthorized inspection of its private information by IRS employees as well as damages caused by the delay in receiving a determination of exempt status.

A copy of the complaint can be found here.

Last year, a sister organization, King Street Patriots - also started by True the Vote founder, Catherine Engelbrecht - was found to be a PAC rather than a non-profit for purposes of Texas campaign finance law.

True the Vote is an absolute boil on the butt of humanity and there is a special level of hell for anyone affiliated with this group.

Among other things they like to do, they enjoy intimidating people of color from even going into their polling place and, have been known to illegally stand and watch as these people who were not intimidated, vote.

There’s no way True the Vote is a non-profit organization…

Term limits vote scheduled for May 15

texasredistricting:

The Texas House will take up a proposed constitutional amendment on May 15 that would limit statewide officeholders (other than judges) to two consecutive terms starting with terms elected in 2014.

The Texas Senate passed the amendment 27-4 in a vote in March, and the proposed amendment cleared the House state affairs committee unanimously in April.

If the full house approves next week, the amendment would go to Texas voters in November.

The proposed amendment is SJR 13.

In other words, everyone is tired of Rick Perry’s nonsense.

Texas has always prided itself on its free-market posture. It is the only state that does not require companies to contribute to workers’ compensation coverage. It boasts the largest city in the country, Houston, with no zoning laws. It does not have a state fire code, and it prohibits smaller counties from having such codes. Some Texas counties even cite the lack of local fire codes as a reason for companies to move there.

But Texas has also had the nation’s highest number of workplace fatalities — more than 400 annually — for much of the past decade.

After Explosion, Texas Remains Wary of Regulation - NYTimes (via brooklynmutt)

Yeah… and no OSHA requirements or a state income tax, either… We’re a ridiculous state, and I can’t rationally think of why I love it, but then I remember Austin and I say, “oh… yeah.”

George Bush raising money in DC

campaignmoney:

George P. Bush, that is, the son of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. He’s running for Texas Land Commissioner:

Some of Washington’s most powerful Republican donors are playing host at a Wednesday evening fundraiser for George P. Bush, a candidate for Texas Land Commissioner and the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush

Attendees are paying $500 for the event taking place at the National Association of Wholesale-Distributors Office, according to a copy of the invitation. Among those expected to attend are Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and Rep. Aaron Shock, R-Illinois.

We get the leaders we deserve.  God help Texas if we “deserve” George Prescott Bush.  Texas Land Commissioner, through no way I clearly understand, administers funding to public school districts.

Election Cycle Reminder

Even though they’re just local municipalities and school board elections, apparently, I’m being sucked in, to an extent… SO, I anticipate being an incredibly busy girl the next week or so.  (Election Day is on Saturday, May 11th and then, Houston Municipal Elections and other Board of Trustee Elections begin for November’s General Election.)

Not ignoring you, I promise.  You’re all awesome and aces and I really enjoy all of you that I communicate with on a regular basis: wineandazaleas, thisismymonkey, musingandmulling, whiferdill, ladyfabulous, hijabeng, sixohthree, and etc….

Oh!!  And, I’m going to the Annie’s List Luncheon where Sandra Fluke is going to speak on Tuesday.  I’m excited!

“WHAT?!”

Every once in a while I have a day where I completely understand why Olivia Pope answers the phone by saying, “What?!”

Having one today… everyone in the world is calling me (including a collect call from a guy in prison?  Seriously dude?  I’m not the girl you’re looking for.)… everyone EXCEPT the one call I’ve been waiting on… and now, so nervous about.

The meeting — described as “tense” by several people familiar with it — ended with [House Majority Whip Kevin] McCarthy abruptly standing up and storming out of the room.

Or, very common in the South… women who say my husband and I make the decision about how to vote together…

Hero GOP Senator’s Office Tells Gays To Go Grow Their Own Food and Gasoline
Washington state Senator Mike Hewitt is cosponsoring an awesome and superconstitutional antidiscrimination bill, SB 5927. It says you can’t discriminate against people based on their race, country of origin, sexual orientation, etc., unless you really really want to. Cool bill! Very awesome! You may not refuse to do commerce or real estate with someone who is gay or an immigrant or a veteran, unless Jesus told you not to do commerce or real estate with someone who is gay or an immigrant or a veteran. So then a Washingtonian fellow called Mike Hewitt’s office to be like WTF? And according to The Stranger, here is what happened next!

During the phone calls, he says he asked staffers some variation of the question “What are rural gays supposed to do if the only gas station or grocery store for miles won’t sell them gas and food?”
Castro says the staffer at Hewitt’s office surprised him with the answer “Well, gay people can just grow their own food.”

Then they hung up on him, and then they hung up on The Stranger about a million times, because “courage.”
