Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people. Unfortunately, that’s too rare a commodity. A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.

This is why one of the best compliments I have ever received was to be called a “problem solver”.   I just connect things very quickly… like how Hermione in Harry Potter says, “I’m highly logical, which allows me to look past extraneous detail and perceive clearly that which others overlook.”

A part of that, is knowing instantly what to just disregard and what to hone in on, and most of the time, I have no idea how I figure out the most important details, process them and either work or suggest a resolution that other people didn’t either see or even conceive.

On the anniversary of Steve Jobs’ death, listen to this incredible, newly discovered speech he gave in 1983, in which he predicts the future of technology. An excerpt:

“People are going to be spending more time interacting with these machines than they do interacting with their big automobiles today … People are going to be spending two, three hours a day sometimes interacting with these machines.”

RIP, Steve Jobs.

You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

Dear Mr. Jobs

No doubt, if I had met you, you would have asked me to call you Steve, but the more respectful Mr. Jobs will have to do, and it’s far more fitting.

I came late to the Mac party, though, not completely through my own fault.  I had parents in the telecommunications industry, and even though my father loved Beta over VHS, he was never quite a Mac.  Perhaps he knew, early on how the industry was heading.  Because of him, I had to learn DOS.  Because of him, my cries of adding Windows to our home PC to make it easier were made in vain.  Because of him, I am more comfortable around a computer than I am most people.

I clearly remember when I knew I was different.  I knew I wanted different.  It happened at a crossroads of my life and I made so many decisions at once.  I was in Ohio, in 2004, working on a campaign and it was Michael’s Mac that I fell in love with.  I was determined from that moment on, to get one.

My first solo major computer purchase is the MacBook Pro I am currently using to type this.  I named him Keoki.  You were the man that made it okay to name electronic gadgets.

There are no other eloquents words I can choose tonight to say to you, other than, “Thank You.”

Thank you, Mr. Jobs for understanding that computers did not need to be intimidating, that one should not need a Computer Science degree to operate them.

Thank you, Mr. Jobs, for understanding that design matters.

Thank you, Mr. Jobs, for revolutionizing the music industry, for changing how we consume music, and making it a part of many more people’s daily lives.  (Though, my savings account has a bone to pick with you about my iTunes bills…)

Thank you, Mr. Jobs, for understanding that how we look at information was just as important as the information, for understanding that colours matter, typography matters… Beauty matters.

Thank you, Mr. Jobs, for making geeky sexy… for making computers sexy…

Thank you, Mr. Jobs… for being ahead of your time.  I cry tonight, because you changed my life, you changed my world…. and you made it infinitely better.

Genius has a method to it, a madness to it… Mercurial?  Maybe.  Worth it?  Absolutely.

Thank you, Mr. Jobs.  Just… Thank you.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Text of resignation letter by former Apple CEO STEVE JOBS.

Still speechless

life:

Inventor, corporate titan, salesman, cult guru…
However you think of Steve Jobs, there’s little doubt that Apple Computer’s CEO and No. 1 pitchman has become the most well-known face in Silicon Valley. But if you’d hung with him back in the day, you wouldn’t necessarily have predicted it.
