The case that’s united (and divided) abortion activists: Doctor Kermit Gosnell is charged with killing four babies by slicing their spinal cords during late-term abortion procedures in violation of Pennsylvania’s 24-week limit. The case has drawn criticism from both pro- and anti-abortion activists, with each side blaming the other. Pro-life activists say Gosnell’s actions are barbaric, while pro-choice advocates say Gosnell’s “House of Horrors” is the result of legitimate abortion clinics being driven out of the state. Iron Jawed Angels dramatization of the March 3, 1913 Suffrage Parade.

Hillary Swank = Militant suffragist and parade organizer Alice Paul

Frances O’Connor = Militant suffragist and parade organizer Lucy Burns

Julia Ormond (on horseback with wings) = Inez Milholland

Laura Fraser (brown hat, holding US flag) = Doris Stevens

Angelic Huston = Carrie Chapman Catt

Margo Martindale (in the car with Angelica Huston) = Harriot Blatch

Adilah Barnes = Ida B. Wells (Ida B. Wells and the Howard students)

Vera Farmiga = Ruza Wenclawska/Rose Winslow

Brooke Smith = Mabel Vernon

For real, though…. women that tell me, “oh, I don’t vote…” or, “I’m not political” (in a whisper voice as if it’s something I should be ashamed of), or “let me talk to my husband, we decide who to vote for together…”  really annoy the shit out of me.

Especially when you consider what it took to get the vote…

Politics decides your daily life, from how bumpy your streets are, to what your children are taught in schools, to whether or not you can have access to a safe medical procedure, to what food is available at the grocery store and who’s monitoring it… so, how dare you not vote or think that’s something to be ashamed to care about.

Dianna Agron speaking at a NARAL Pro-Choice America event [x]

I was fortunate enough to have a chance to chat with Dianna Agron at this event - she was lovely and clearly very committed to reproductive justice and health.

I am for any young actress that is willing to stand with NARAL and explain its importance as an organization to young women and girls.

You can do polling and find that people who self-describe as pro-life actually believe in the rights of women to have access to abortion. These political labels mask what’s actually happening in this country.

Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards talks to Brian Lehrer about why her organization wants to move beyond “pro-life” and “pro-choice.” Listen. (via wnyc)

From Griswold, to Roe, to Casey, our courts have recognized that these personal decisions — the ability to take ownership of your own reproductive destiny — are inherent in the liberty and equality our Constitution protects. As we approach the next major reproductive rights case to reach the Supreme Court, the question now is whether those rights will be made subject to the religious beliefs of others.
